Trinis 2017

fearless-2717

Trinis Neo and Shinjin Neo range of rods were accepted by fishermen not just in Croatia, but all over the Europe. That doesn´t come as a suprise, since both were built on great blanks and equipped with Fuji guides and fair priced. In 2017. these 2 families will become one happy family with more models than ever. We are talking about more than 50 models, both spinning and casting. We at Spineri, together with all of the people that attended 3. Sakura UL Tournament in Lokve, Croatia feel really cool because we had an exclusive opportunity to see and try some of the new models before everybody else.

fearless-3191

Trinis Neo and Shinjin Neo gave us many great catches in the last couple of years, since they followed us on most of our fishing trips and we have nothing but great memories with them. When we heard that boys in Sakura plan to combine these 2 series in one, in a way that they will take Trinis Neo blanks and put Shinjin Neo guides and grips so that they can lower the price, it felt like positive answer to our prayers. The thing is that we like our Trinis Neo rods a bit more than our Shinjin Neo rods, since they are a bit classier. They trully are, as they say, top shelf product. In the other hand, Shinjin Neo rods are exceptional in so many ways. Their range was so vast, with so many models that suit modern lure angler needs that we used them more.

Sakura´s new range of rods is built on superb Trinis Neo blanks, which are fast, sensitive, powerful and transmit every move of the lure together with shiest takes so they deserve to carry Trinis name. To continue with a mission that started with Ryokan rods last year, and that is to close up Sakura rods to wider circle of fishermen, they decided to put Fuji Alconite guides on blanks, which are cheaper than SiC guides, but they don´t affect on performances, or durabillity at all, neither they make any difference while fishing. Difference in price is substantial, though, so new Trinis should cost somewhere like Shinjin rods in the past.

fearless-3177 fearless-3198

Now, when these two became one, when we have Trinis Neo blank wrapped up in Shinjin Neo equippment, we feel like we don´t have ask for nothing more.. Maybe only something in 2,50 meters of lenght around 25-30 grams of casting weight. Untill then, 2,33 long models from Long Range range will do the job, just like they did in the past.

So, what´s new and how does it look? 30+ spinning and 20+ casting models models that cover everything you can imagine, from UL to shore game, in lenghts from 1,80 up to 2,9 meters, with casting weights as small as 3 grams up to 150 grams. We have special models for micro lures and drop shot techniqe, followed by float tube models. Then we have some specials for spinnerbaits and cranks made of fiberglass, short models for vertical fishing, allround models for everyday fishing, together with long range, travel and power game models. It´s like the end that monolog from Tarantino´s From Dusk Till Dawn movie.. If we don´t have´em, you don´t need´em!

fearless-2669fearless-2701

As we said, thanks to Sakura´s Tanguy Marlin we had an exclusive chance to see and try some of the new rods and we like how they feel and look like, as well as all of the people who tried them on Lokvarsko lake shore on 3rd Sakura UL Tournament.

4-piece travel model in lenght of 2,13 m with casting weight 7-28 grams was kind of suprise for all of us. It feels more powerful than rated and I find this awesome rod for heavy cover fishing for bass and pike. Fast, stiff and sensitive tip casts everything from 10 to 30, or even more grams and it´s strong backbone has enough power to cope with biggest bass and medium sized pike, among other species.

fearless-2575fearless-2544

Great allrounder for those who travel a lot and can´t or don´t want to carry too many rods around. There are 3 more spinning models and 4 casting models covering most of the situations modern lure angler can come up.

Trinis Long Range models in 2,33 m of lenght and with casting weights of 20, 35, 60 and 85 grams are followers of Shinjin Neo Long Range models. Past models were my favourites, in lighter versions for bass, asp and barbel fishing and in heavier versions for pike and hucho. New Trinis LR with advanced blanks continues great tradition and looks better than ever. No matter if you´re after bass and pike on some lake, or pond, or you look for asp and barbel in river rapids, or you cast for seabass and bluefish from the sea shore, these rods will manage it. Although they are only 2,33 m long, due to it´s tip action, they cast lures far and accurate and because of it´s lenght, it´s a child game to animate twitchbaits, stickbaits and soft swimbaits with them. Shinjin Neo LR rods were exceptional rods with reasonable price, Trinis Neo LR with advanced blanks and same price are bargain!

Trinis Neo family of rods in 2,13 m of lenght were our pets. UL, ML, M version, we have them all here at Spineri. Because they are awesome rods. Awesome blanks, awesome equipment, awesome action, al packed in nice finish. They were a bit too expensive for our fellow fishermen, but every single one that put his hands on any of them said those are remarkable rods. After I spent some really quality time fishing with Trinis Neo M (2,13 m, 5-21 g), I can say that new Trinis didn´t lose anything of it´s action that I like so much. It seems very stiff at first, but it has perfect curve when fighting fish. I used mostly for bass fishing with wide range of lures, from soft stickbaits like 3-4 inch Senko to mid sized spinnerbaits and shallow and mid running crankbaits, but there were times when I was abusing it. Times when asp is chasing minnows on the other side of the river, and only lure you can cast that far is 30+ grams soft vib.. Well, Trinis can that, too and I am sure that new model doesn´t stand by a bit. Same blank, new guides, better price.. Doesn´t get better than that.

fearless-3187

Somewhat in a shadow of new Trinis were new Sportism models. Sportism 862 MH was first Sakura rod I used. I remember an enormous amount of power packed in nice, eye catching red and white cosmetic. It turned out it is sensitive enough for shy zander takes at one side and powerfull enough to cope with 10-15 kilo catfsh in Sava river rapids. New models are redesigned, they got back Sakura black and orange cosmetic and thinner handles, so it sits nice in the hand. That feeling of power when you hold one, didn´t change, though. There are 12 spinning and 6 casting models covering everything from UL to XXH fishing.

fearless-3193 fearless-3195

In 2017. Ryokan family will get new members, too. One UL rod with solid tip (2,30 m, 0,5-5 g) and 2 work horses in 2,60 and 2,90 m of lenght with casting weights of 15-60 g and 20-80 g. Since I am abusing 782 and 802 MH models since they came, I am allowed to say that these rods feel unbreakable, especially shorter one. I´ve been casting big lures , over 70 g with 782 MH model and pulling pike from heaviest cover. Guys from Topfishing store lifted bags of fish food with it, but the craziest story is one that Tanguy told us; they took one and bent it in a circle, so that tip of the rod ended on it´s butt. As they say on TV, don´t try this at home.

Anyways, in a couple of days of Tanguy´s visit, these rods caught almost everything that swims in Croatia. Pike, zander, trout, barbel, asp, .. and it´s fair to say they domesticated here. Comments on presentation at Sakura UL Tournament were great, too, so there is no other to sit and wait for them to show up in fishing stores. Looks like we have a long, long winter in front of us..

Monster Hunter

Etienne Fleurant is a superb fisherman specialized for taking big pikes out of their homes.. After he sent us plenty of photos with really big fish, we asked him if he would like to share some of his secrets, experiences and fishing stories with us.

DSC04707-1

So lets go…

Hi Robert, hi Goran, I’m glad to talk about pike fishing with you. I have followed some of your outings and I have to say there seems to be many more things to discover in Croatia. You have a lot of different places, preserved, as well as beautiful landscapes. In short, lot of good reasons to visit you again. I could even see some pictures of big pike. And as you know, pike is one of my favorite- hand by hand with black bass.

What kind of water do you prefer for pike fishing? Big, or  small, shallow or deep,  lake, or river?

I love them all!

But I must confess that my favorites are the great outdoors. I love big lakes. They hold a lot of mysteries. It’s a bit silly but when I fish these places, I always tell myself that there are giant fishes, measuring their home. May be a resurgence in the Lockness monster story…

DSC01519-2

What kind of feeling is to catch pike on large, deep lakes?

DSC04382-1

Pike fishing in big lakes is special. It requires extensive research and a lot of practice time to get consistent results. This is a fishing where involvement is very large and it gives weight to each capture. Pike is the iconic predator in France. Pike fishing in large and big lakes adds some greatness to each fish. Each bite, your heart beats faster, as you can have an appointment with a giant.

I’m sure Lokvarsko lake in Croatia holds very large fish.

How to find big fish in this kind of lakes?

As everywhere, food is an essential element for predators fishing. So, the research of position of baitfish is an essential step. In deep lakes where the water is clear, pike move a lot. They stop only a few places more or less time. The feeding periods are generally short and sudden. Suddenly, they bite. Then about ten minutes later, it´s dead calm. I most often search baitfish with sonar. I like when the baitfish’s position indicates that fishes are disturbed. It is better to see lots of small balls exploded than a big school placed near the bottom. The other important factor in this kind of lakes is the wind.

At each appearance, or change of direction, pike can become active. During this time, you must be fishing your best spots!

DSC00384-1

If you caught big fish on lake you know, do you try to find similar situation on a lake where you are the first time? Does pike live and hunt on same place the whole time?

Every situation is different. And, yes, experience can be a good tool, but it is necessary to analyze each of them. It depends on so many factors. The season, type of lake, weather, fish population…

But I think in large clear lake, pike don´t have really special areas. To me, they spend their time in swimming, to find water temperatures that best match their thermal preferences. This is very different from the smaller lakes or shallow rivers where pike can have their territory. But one thing is sure,to take big fish, you have to fish places where they are. And a lake that has already given big fish continues to produce big fish because it has the characteristics needed for that.

Best time for pike fishing (calendar month and part of the day)?

Without any hesitation, autumn.

The baitfish begin to regroup and fish are easier to locate. In addition, the weather conditions are favorable with windy days that I love. You can get bite at any time during the day. Sometimes the sign trigger is hardly perceptible. But to catch big fish regularly, you must be prepared to spend many hours on the water.

[ezcol_1half]etienne_fleurant_leman_01-2[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]etienne_fleurant-555x369-1[/ezcol_1half_end]

Does this change from water to water or there is some pattern?

As I told you before, each situation is different.

It would be too easy if there was a model that was still running… The most important thing is to know your lake and pike behavior. For example, in France, pikes of alpine lakes do not behave like those of the West Lake.

When you´re after a big fish, do you spend more time looking for the right spot, or you spend most of the time casting? Do you change your strategy if you can´t get a bite?

I never change strategy when I search specifically for a large fish. I’m looking for baitfish, and if I see pike around, I fish. If it does not bite, there are several solutions. When I do not know much about the lake, I remain long on the spot and wait for pike to become active. If I know the lake better, I exchange areas and try to find which area will be good. Sometimes I fish only ten minutes before a zone change. But this approach requires a very good knowledge of the fishing area and in order to do that, you have to fish every day of a week.

After it can also be a mix of both. I can only select two areas and divide my time. Sometimes, the feeding zones are very small. Other times, they can be very large. For example, during my last trip, the first day we took all our fish on an area of 50m². But the second day, at a time of the day, we were getting bites all over the lake.

DSC04600-2

Do you think that big pike is a teritorial fish? Do you change spot if you have bites from smaller pikes? Or did you have situation where you had more ( 90 + ) big pikes at one spot?

Pike does have a territorial behavior, but lake is very different. I think the fish evolve with congeners of the same age class. When I fish big lake for big pike, each catch of 75cm fish pushes me to change the area.

Does pike prefer big meal or smaller ones have a pass to?

I am not a pike for answer to this question… I often use 15cm baits. There are sufficient to sort little fish and not too big for use all day long.

If pike is not active can you triger the attack with bigger bait?

Maybe!

I often say that we fish only active fishes. We are not smart enough to fool the fish who do not wish to eat. Especially a big pike is a fish of a old age and it managed to grow so big because eating is it´s job! It is often said that the pike is akward. I do not think so. It distinguishes perfectly that your lure Is not a prey.

What lure strategy did bring you the bigest fishes?

Cranking shad. Retrieve a 15/20cm soft bait lure.

Do you think that big pike is a lazy fish or it will run for a meal?

Big pike are not lazy!

They can travel great distances to find a diet that suits them. They know their environment and prey. They capture only during periods of activity because apart from those moments of euphoria you can not deceive them. But when a big pike hunts, it can swim more than 20 m to take your lure.

What kind of setup do you use for big pikes?

I use tackle adapted to my lures. But for catching big pike as all the other species, tackle is not the most important. I just want to be sure of reliability. But I understand that you would like some clarification.

So my ideal ensemble consitutes like this:

DSC04609-5

– 7.4 feet XH rod able to cast a 100g lure

– 6.4 ratio reel with a good and progressive brake

– 0.25mm braid

– 0.40mm leader on fluorocarbon

– 0.80mm terminal on fluorocarbon

– 15/20cm soft bait with jighead adapted for the lake I want to fish.

I hope I answered some of your questions. But the best thing that I can do is to come again to you so we can try to catch big Croatian pike together. In the meantime, there are some beautiful days by the end of the year to catch a big fish, so I look forward to your pictures…

Easy shiner

_MG_6371

Some people use 3-4 lures all their life here in Croatia. They keep it simple. When they go for a zander, they throw white, or yellow grub. For pike, there is inline spinnerbait with willow leaf blade.

Now and then, they put a Rapala Original on a snap and that´s it. And they catch fish. On the other side, there is us. Me and my friends, as well as some unknown fellows, kind of people that would tie the devil himself on a line if we only could. Just to see how he wiggles on retrieve and darts on a twitch.

Although I have more than enough lures of all kinds, I am allways in a search for a something new. And in those rare moments when I think I have it all, or at least enough, somehow it happens that something new finds me.

That special evening, I wasn´t looking for anything. Cross my heart and hope to die! I even have 2 witneses that I was sitting calm in a Cajti caffe, drinking Velebitsko beer and watching football on a TV. I wasn`t  thinking about fish, fishing, lures, rods, or anything similar. I just sat there and that was it.

_MG_6383

Then my good friend Krmpa came. Without rhyme or reason he pulled some 10 to 15 bags of soft plastic lures of various kinds. Bye-bye football, hello rubbers! As he was sipping his gorki pelinkovac (croatian liqueur made of aromatic herbs, goes nice with beer), I was digging into the bags.

From that pile of rubber I picked 3 pieces at the end. The one that Krmpa was claiming has the best action ever I didn´t take. I simply couldn´t because it smelled bad. Real bad. And it wasn´t beauty queen either. The three I took looked like a tuned Lunker City Shakers. They sat in my box, I ignored them for a month, or two and then they saved the day 2 times in 48 hours, when i couldn´t get a bite on anything else.

[ezcol_1half]_MG_6339[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]_MG_6344[/ezcol_1half_end]_MG_6347 _MG_6350 _MG_6353 _MG_6356

Next telephone conversation went something like this:

´Hey, buddy, those rubbers i took from you, what´s that? Keitech Easy Shiner? OK, thanks..´Keitech was established in 1996. by Kei Hayashi. All I managed to find on web is that one of the mostsuccessful tournament fisherman in Japan.

Anyhow, Mr Hayashi´s Easy Shiner is another exciting swimbait with a great catch ratio. It comes in 3 sizes: 3, 4 and 5 inch and variety of colours. Sleek profile is created by a fusion of a Shad Impact´s body and a Swing Impact paddle tail.

Because of it´s tall and slender body, Easy Shiner has great body roll. Body roll which is not as aggressive as one would think by looking only. That´s why it can be rigged on hooks with heads weighting only 2-3 g (1/16-1/8 oz) and still have great, not too offensive action, which isn´t case with other swimbaits with similar shape of body. I found an information on the web that upper side of a body is made of one material, and lower of another, salt infused material. This could be a reason of it´s great, not too strong body roll considering that salted material is heavier than the one without salt. Material is pretty soft and that also contributes to Easy Shiner´s great action. It is scented with squid scent, but not as heavily as Swing Impact. According to our experiences, it works for pike and zander, and we have no doubt that trout and largemouth bass will find it attractive as well when season comes.

_MG_6359

Unlike some other swimbaits who have hollow belly, Easy Shiner has only a shallow slot on it´s belly. In that way, normal jig hook gives good support to the body, so it won´t slide off the hook during a cast or retrieve. On the other hand, worm hook sits nicely and hooks up fish well. He is more durable than hollow belly swimbaits as well.

_MG_6363 _MG_6371 _MG_6376 _MG_6379

We achieved best results by rigging it on a jig hook, or a weighted offset worm hook and twitching it gently. Rigged like that it gives the most. Wide and tall body produces a lot of flash, but overall action isn` tacky at all. By our experiences, that works great for active and semi-active fish, especialy for zander, which often needs to be tampered, but not too much.

Sexy Mrs. Claus Cup

Sipac gliders

_MG_5517

Some great things happen by an accident. We avarded hundredth who liked spineri.com on our facebook profile and it turned out he makes jerkbait gliders which he promised to send when finished. We promised we´ll put them ona test, and if they satisfy, we´ll make presentation here. As you can see, we are satisfied, and some more. In Drago´s own words, all started in late nineties when Drago and his friend Nikola saw Rapala Shallow shad rap in fishing magazine. It was nowhere to be bought, so they made it! 25 years later, first jerkbaits are coming out from a these 2 manufacture. They started with 2 models: Ragnarok and Smaug. Both of them are hand made out of linden tree, they are 4 times coated, hand painted, and protected by an epoxy resin at the end.

_MG_5477

Ragnarok found his name in Norse mythology, Ragnarok is a series of future events, including a great battle between gods and giants, a battle in which everybody gets killed, and almost all world is destroyed. In reality, Ragnarok is 15 cm (6 inches) long and 50 g ( 1 ¾ oz) heavy glider which will ´destroy´ pike. According to Drago, customers will be able to choose exact decor in the future. Ragnarok itself has a great glide, a good body roll and belly flash and makes a lot of mess in a little space. It´s not a ordinary way to use a glider, but this one can be twiched with sharp, short quick downsnaps of a rod tip. That way it shows it´s belly and flickers while it sinks between snaps.

_MG_5481

Pikey Smaug is named after one of the last big dragons of Middle-earth, which can be seen these days in theaters in the Hobbit. Even if you’re not Tolkien´s fan, you should pay attention on Smaug. With his respectable dimensions, 20 cm (8 inches) and 65 g (2 ¼ oz), Smaug represents serious lure, or a nice meal, if you ask pike. It imitates a small pike with its shape and therefore is somewhat unconventional in the world of gliders. Due to the shape of the body that easily cuts thru water, it has really nice action and it is easy to get it to ´walk the dog´ under surface. Its glides can be as a meter long if you work it slowly. If you work it faster, it can have as much as a 3-4 side to side glides in one square meter. If you work it with shorter and sharper jerks, it works only a couple of centimetres under surface. That makes it usable even in a shallow water, as well as in waters with lots of vegetation which often holds a good pike population. You can let it sink as well if you´re fishing in deeper water.

[ezcol_1half]_MG_5510-Edit[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]_MG_5521[/ezcol_1half_end]_MG_5491

Smaug is manufactured in 2 decors for a start. It has great belly flash and in combination with wide glide, it lures pike from greater distances. What you need for casting these baits, is a short extra heavy action rod. It takes only a little effort to make them glide, because they are very well tuned. Both can be retrieved steadilly as well, in that way they produce ´S´ kind of an action, especially Smaug. Considering these baits are 100% hand made, be ready to wait for them for a couple of days, or weeks. These lures deserve it by all means. First test models already swim in waters of Croatia, Denmark, England, Sweden and so on and as we hear, first impressions are positive. As Drago says, ´Our goal is to make lures with good catching ratio all over the world by testing our baits in the waters of region, as well as in other parts of the world´. We have no doubt that Sipac jerk manufacture will accomplish their goal.

Spineri.com gives them 2 thumbs up!

Autmn time

_MG_2742-Edit

Car lights that are coming towards me only now and then cuts thru the fog while I drive down the road. Lake is in the fog as well. I park by the water, coming out of a car and like a robot start to assemble my rod. Reel, line, wire trace, spinnerbait. I am ready. Spinnerbait is pretty beaten already, fire tiger pattern on a blade exists in traces only. It caught quite some pike this autumn. In vest pockets I have couple more spinnerbaits, few weedless spoons, some swimbaits rigged weightless and couple of twitchbaits. More than enough for this time of year. I am alone at this side of a lake, on the other side there is just one guy. He´s sitting still by his rods.

IMG_3154-2

Fallen leaves rustle under my feet and the soles of boots sinking into a thin layer of mud below while I walk. Autumn is definitely here, a time when fish eat more so they could survive thru the cold winter that is coming. On a first spot most of water vegetation has fallen down to the bottom already. Only a few leaves of water lily are on the surface. I can work it with spinnerbaits just like that. First cast is along the bank, and rest of them are more and more out on a water. Shortly, one is tricked. Unfair fight is over very fast. Few moments later, (un)lucky pikey is released and he is coming back to the seeming safety of water lilies. In a next field of water lilies nice pike follows my lure, but it won´t bite. I am rigging mogambo grub on a weightless worm hook, and casting it in a direction where I saw a pike.
I animate it with short twitches of a rod tip. First time around nothing happens, but in the second cast there it is. It came out of nowhere, it´s unbeilevable how fast it appeared behind the lure! It is standing still and fixating a grub. Only its pectoral fins nervously. Gentle twitch of a rod tip results with a momentarily bite. It packed it in its mouth and it slowly turns away. I lower rod tip so I can set a hook better, line straightens, and BAM, I am whacking it. It is pumping on the other side of a line, rod is bent, but it lasts a couple of seconds only. Worm hook didn´t break thru, or didn´t come thru at all. Weedlees is fishless sometimes, especially in pike fishing. Later, couple of more pikeys couldn´t resist spinnerbait blades flashes and then sun started showing on a horizon. The fog lifted and let sun to bathe in a lake. Guy on the other side of a lake is packing his third pikey in a net. They were doomed a moment they got greedy over a dace mounted on a triple hook.
